Greece’s July 2026 labour reforms opened temporary agencies to non‑EU hires and earmarked Digital Work Card surpluses for widows’ and orphan pensions. The Ministry of Labour and Social Security launched the free Ergani mobile platform on 23 July, enabling employers to post urgent short‑term vacancies and file start‑of‑employment notices, working‑time records and termination notices electronically. A “Fast Hiring” add‑on introduced two‑day contracts for tourism, hospitality, catering, retail, event organisation and seasonal agriculture on 25 July.

Inspections in late July uncovered illegal work‑card avoidance, with some firms disguising employees as managers, customers or hiding them in crates, freezers, fitting rooms and beach loungers. Fines were imposed as authorities stepped up checks ahead of the summer peak.

On 30 July the Labour Inspection Authority reported a surge of such evasive tactics across supermarkets, beach bars, sawmills, food‑processing plants and clothing stores, underscoring persistent compliance gaps.

The following day, the Ministry announced that the Ergani app, complemented by a companion “myErgani” app, allows instant mobile hiring of contracts up to two days, automatically updates the Ergani II system and records actual working time. Minister Niki Kerameos said the tool cuts bureaucracy, speeds recruitment and strengthens employee protection.
