Sources: 2. Developments: 2. Greek MEP Nikolas Farantouris has raised concerns regarding the potential for classified defense technology to leak to Turkey. This inquiry follows a European Commission roadmap for EU enlargement, which suggests integrating candidate countries into defense financial tools like the SAFE and EDIP programs. Farantouris questioned whether the Commission is considering Turkey’s participation in these programs, citing Turkey’s low alignment with the Common Foreign and Security Policy and its defense ties with countries such as Russia and Pakistan. Subsequently, Farantouris called for the Greek Prime Minister to brief EU counterparts at an upcoming summit regarding the potential activation of the mutual defense clause. He stated that Greece should warn partners that it would request the activation of Article 42, paragraph 7 of the Treaty on European Union if Turkey proceeds with threats of attack or obstruction. This clause requires member states to provide assistance, including military and financial support, to a member state facing an armed attack. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-30: Nikolas Farantouris calls for EU summit briefing on mutual defense clause MEP Nikolas Farantouris urges Greece to brief the EU on potentially activating Article 42(7) mutual defense in response to Turkish threats. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/nikolas-farantouris-calls-for-eu-summit-briefing-on-mutual-defense-clause ### 2026-10-22: Nikolas Farantouris warns EU of defense technology leak risks to Turkey MEP Nikolas Farantouris has asked the European Commission to clarify safeguards against the potential leak of sensitive defense technologies to Turkey via EU financial tools like SAFE and EDIP. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/nikolas-farantouris-warns-eu-of-defense-technology-leak-risks-to-turkey --- Cite as: Greek MEP concerns over Turkey and EU defense.
