In late September, the POE-OTA federation criticized authorities in Aktio-Vonitsa for relocating school cleaners, a move they claim imposes financial burdens on low-wage workers. Simultaneously, in Skopelos, the DAS-OTA union demanded the decommissioning of dangerous sanitation vehicles, reporting that garbage trucks with faulty brakes and steering pose risks to workers and public safety. On October 9, the situation escalated following a workplace accident in Ilioupoli, where a sanitation worker suffered a finger amputation after his hand became trapped in a bin. The Municipality of Ilioupoli Employees Association attributed the incident to systemic failures, specifically citing an aging vehicle fleet, a lack of equipment replacement planning, and delays in providing personal protective equipment (PPE). ## Timeline ### 2026-10-09: Ilioupoli sanitation worker injured in workplace accident A sanitation worker in Ilioupoli, Greece, suffered a finger amputation during a waste collection accident, prompting labor unions to demand better safety measures and equipment upgrades. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/ilioupoli-sanitation-worker-injured-in-workplace-accident ### 2026-09-30: Greek labor unions protest municipal worker conditions Greek labor unions are protesting poor working conditions, including unfair relocations in Aktio-Vonitsa and dangerous, poorly maintained sanitation vehicles in Skopelos. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/greek-labor-unions-protest-municipal-worker-conditions --- Cite as: Greek municipal worker labor and safety disputes.
