Developments: 2. In the Greek Parliament, discussions have emerged regarding potential increases in compensation for Members of Parliament participating in parliamentary committees. The proposal suggests doubling the current rate of 75 euros per session to 150 euros, a level previously seen before the austerity period. There are also discussions concerning adjustments to housing allowances for MPs elected outside of Attica to address rising rents in Athens. While reports suggested these increases were being processed, the Presidency of the Parliament clarified that no official decision has been made and no formal announcement was issued by Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis. The Speaker noted that any changes would require political consensus and could only be considered in the new year if no opposition exists. The matter has faced political backlash. Zoi Konstantopoulou criticized the proposal amid citizen struggles with the cost of living, and Independent MP Haris Mamoulakis opposed the idea, stating that committee participation is a “fundamental duty rather than an extra service to be rewarded.” Mamoulakis pledged to donate any potential increase to the Deposits and Loans Fund. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-01: Greek Parliament discusses potential increase in MP committee compensation The Greek Parliament is facing controversy following reports of discussions to double committee compensation for MPs and adjust housing allowances amid rising living costs. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/hellenic-parliament-denies-reports-of-increased-mp-allowances ### 2026-09-24: European Parliament MEP compensation and conduct scrutinized An editorial critiques the conduct of a European Parliament member and details the monthly compensation of MEPs, which can total approximately 17,450 euros including allowances. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/european-parliament-mep-compensation-and-conduct-scrutinized --- Cite as: Greek parliamentary compensation debates.
