Consumer dietary habits in Greece are undergoing a significant shift toward ready-to-eat meals as traditional home cooking declines. Data from the Institute of Retail Research on Consumer Goods (IELKA) indicates that the market share of ready-to-eat food in supermarket ‘hot corners’ has nearly doubled over the last decade, rising from 16% in 2016 to 29% in 2026.

According to Apostolos Petalas, General Director of the Supermarket Association of Greece, the ready-to-eat food market has now surpassed 1 billion euros in turnover, maintaining an annual growth rate of approximately 3%. On average, Greek households spend approximately 14.79 euros per week on ready-to-eat meals purchased from supermarkets, totaling roughly 770 euros annually.

This trend is driven by time constraints, urbanization, and the prevalence of smaller households. While 41% of consumers prioritize time-saving solutions, an additional 19% find cooking for small numbers of people to be inefficient. 

In response, supermarkets are evolving into hybrid retail spaces and immediate consumption destinations. Retailers are systematically investing in these departments and expanding product variety—including roasted chicken, pies, salads, and bakery products—as well as specialized vegan, gluten-free, and high-protein options to increase customer visit frequency and expand the consumer basket.
