Sources: 7. Developments: 2. The Greek Teachers' Federation (OIELA) and the Federation of Private Educational Operators (OIEL) have raised allegations of systemic corruption involving school sports and university entrance examinations. According to the federations, certain private and public schools in cities such as Athens, Thessaloniki, and Patras may be utilizing “ghost students”—athletes who are enrolled but do not attend classes—to manipulate school championships. These manipulations are reportedly designed to secure athletic distinctions that grant students bonus points for Panhellenic university entrance examinations. The alleged corruption extends beyond basketball to include water polo, handball, and volleyball. Reported practices include the use of “double attendance” records, favoritism by referees, and the creation of fictitious championships. Additionally, complaints have been filed regarding financial misconduct, with allegations that members of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) requested payments in exchange for enrolling children in youth national teams. OIEL has submitted evidence to the Ministry of Education and has requested intervention from the Prime Minister and political leaders. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-27: Greece: Allegations of corruption in school sports and university admissions The Federation of Private Educational Operators in Greece has alleged a corruption network involving school sports, fraudulent attendance, and manipulated athletic credits for university admissions. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/greece-allegations-of-corruption-in-school-sports-and-university-admissions ### 2026-10-23: OIELA alleges school sports scandal in Greece The Greek Teachers' Federation (OIELA) has alleged that private schools are using “ghost students” to manipulate sports championships for university entrance bonuses. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/oiela-alleges-school-sports-scandal-in-greece --- Cite as: Greek school sports and university admission scandal.
