Karvouni shared that Stamatis, who passed away in July 2026, had been facing undisclosed health issues but remained involved in the preparation of their upcoming production, ‘Sappho’. 

Stamatis reportedly viewed video recordings of nearly half of the production just days before his death. The play, a monologue inspired by the ancient lyric poet, is directed by Nikaia Kontouri and is scheduled to premiere on November 30, 2026, at the Katerina Vasilakou Theatre. The cast views the production as a tribute to the playwright’s work.
