In August 1823, Markos Botsaris, a Souliote leader described by Victor Hugo as the ‘Leonidas of modern Greece’, was killed during the Battle of Kefalovryso. Despite facing superior Turko-Albanian forces, Botsaris led a group of approximately 350 to 450 Souliotes to victory before his death.

Earlier in the conflict, in September 1821, Panagiotis Karatzas was assassinated by fellow Greeks at the Ompli Monastery near Patras. Karatzas, who had risen from a laborer to a key military figure, was killed during a confrontation involving men seeking revenge for a previous death. His assassination serves as a notable instance of the internal political and personal conflicts that occurred among the Greek revolutionaries.
