A National Geographic expedition in the Ecuadorian Amazon has led to the discovery of a new species, the northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayima). While visually similar to the southern green anaconda (Eunectes murinus), genetic analysis indicates a 5.5 percent difference, suggesting the species may have diverged nearly 10 million years ago.

This genetic gap is noted as being significant when compared to the approximately 2 percent difference between humans and chimpanzees. The identification was supported by the analysis of samples collected across Ecuador, Venezuela, and Brazil, combined with examinations of physical characteristics.

During the expedition, researchers encountered a female northern green anaconda measuring 6.3 meters in length. While members of the indigenous Waorani community, who assisted the team, reported sightings of even larger specimens—potentially exceeding 7.5 meters and weighing approximately 500 kilograms—these specific dimensions have not yet been scientifically confirmed. 

Related scientific discussions emphasize that while reports of massive specimens are often exaggerated, large Green Anacondas continue to exist in remote South American regions. Researchers note that documenting these snakes is challenging due to their nocturnal habits and dense habitats, often relying on physical capture to avoid the perspective distortions common in photographic evidence.
