The Green Party has navigated internal political challenges and introduced new legislative agendas in Mexico and Colombia.

In Mexico, the party faced internal divisions regarding a proposed reform by President Claudia Sheinbaum that would require presidential and gubernatorial candidates to hold only Mexican nationality. Senator Manuel Velasco noted that some legislators hold dual nationality, leading to discussions about a compromise that would apply the restriction only to the presidency.

In Colombia, the party faced criticism from former representative Martha Alfonso, who described the party’s decision to remain independent of President Abelardo de la Espriella’s administration as “shameful,” arguing that neutrality sidelines issues like gender equality and the climate emergency.

In Mexico City, the Green Party (PVEM) has focused on specific legislative initiatives. Deputy Yolanda García Ortega presented a motion requesting transparency in the Tláhuac borough regarding territorial reordering, specifically concerning technical criteria, environmental impact assessments, and citizen participation. Additionally, supported by Jesús Sesma Suárez, the PVEM proposed a reform to the Organic Law of Boroughs to mandate that all 16 boroughs allocate at least two percent of their annual budget to animal welfare and protection programs, such as sterilization and vaccination.

To strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 elections, the PVEM is expanding its regional presence in Mexico. In Lerma, the party recruited businessman Marco Antonio Ruiz Ruiz to build electoral organization. In Sinaloa, Fernando Pucheta Sánchez joined the party, expressing support for the national project led by President Claudia Sheinbaum and prioritizing territorial work in Mazatlán.
