The 40th edition of the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) is scheduled for November 28 to December 6 at Expo Guadalajara. As the world’s largest Spanish-language book fair, the event expects approximately 950,000 attendees and will host roughly 3,000 activities featuring 900 writers from 41 countries.

Italy serves as the Guest of Honor, returning to the role after eighteen years with a delegation of 61 authors. The Italian program is centered around the theme ‘The world speaks to us like a great book,’ a phrase by the late Umberto Eco. The program aims to foster exchange between Italian and Latin American publishing markets through over 120 literary and professional encounters. Notable highlights include an opening by Italian writer Alessandro Baricco, who will participate in a dialogue with Mexican author Valeria Luiselli, and an exhibition of works by Caravaggio.

Key participants include British-Indian author Salman Rushdie, who is scheduled to deliver a keynote lecture on November 28. Due to the 2022 attack in New York, his appearance will require pre-registration and special security protocols. Other notable figures include American novelist Siri Hustvedt and Gioconda Belli, the recipient of the FIL Prize for Romance Languages.

The fair will also pay tribute to Mexican author Juan Rulfo through an immersive pavilion and a dialogue session with his family members. Additionally, journalist José Luis Martínez is set to receive the ‘Fernando Benítez’ National Award for Cultural Journalism. Looking toward the 41st edition in 2027, the City of Buenos Aires has been designated as the guest of honor.
