In early September, Director General of Police Gyanendra Singh Malik ordered the establishment of dedicated Anti-Narcotics Wings (ANWs) in every district and commissionerate. Operating under a ‘Zero Tolerance’ policy, these specialized units are tasked with conducting surveillance on drug hotspots and enforcing the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. This move follows a period where the state recorded over 3,700 cases under the NDPS Act and seized narcotic substances valued at approximately Rs 13,600 crore over five years. Following these structural enforcement measures, the police expanded their efforts into public outreach. On Gandhi Jayanti, authorities launched ‘Drug-Free Society’ campaigns in Ahmedabad and Vadodara. These initiatives included walkathons and awareness programs involving students and NGOs to promote messages such as ‘Say No to Drugs’ and ‘Say No to Tobacco’, aiming to foster societal cooperation in the fight against addiction. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-02: Gujarat Police hold drug awareness campaigns on Gandhi Jayanti On Gandhi Jayanti, Gujarat Police held drug awareness walkathons in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, while historical tributes honored the communal harmony shown in Gandhi's close friendship with Abdul Kadir Bawazir. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/gujarat-police-hold-drug-awareness-campaigns-on-gandhi-jayanti ### 2026-09-06: Gujarat Police to establish Anti-Narcotics Wings in every district Gujarat Police will launch dedicated Anti-Narcotics Wings in every district and commissionerate within seven days to intensify enforcement against drug trafficking and achieve a ‘drug-free’ state. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/gujarat-police-to-establish-anti-narcotics-wings-in-every-district --- Cite as: Gujarat Police anti-narcotics enforcement and awareness.
