Gumi City is pursuing large-scale industrial development focused on advanced technology and defense sectors.

The city is working to establish itself as a national drone and anti-drone cluster. During a recent Ulchi Exercise, Gumi conducted integrated defense drills involving military, police, fire services, and government agencies to test detection and neutralization capabilities against drone-based terror threats. These drills simulated scenarios such as chemical attacks and fire suppression. To strengthen this sector, Gumi is collaborating with academic institutions like Kyungwoon University and defense companies including Hanwha Systems and LIG Nex1 to develop AI-integrated and quantum-secure drones. Local officials are advocating for official designation as a national K-drone integrated civil-military cluster through the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Simultaneously, Gumi is transforming into a global hub for humanoid robots and physical AI, supported by a 19 trillion won investment from Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDS. This project includes constructing a humanoid robot ‘mother factory,’ a ‘robot data factory,’ and a hyperscale AI data center. To bolster the regional economy, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gumi have launched a joint task force to integrate small and medium-sized enterprises into the Samsung robot supply chain, with a provincial strategy to invest 486.2 billion won over five years.

Furthering this transition, Gyeongbuk Provincial Council member Kim Il-su has proposed transforming Gumi into a ‘Physical AI Test City,’ utilizing factories and logistics sites as demonstration spaces. Additionally, the city has rebranded its Robot Vocational Innovation Center to the ‘Robot AI Education Innovation Center’ to train specialists in generative AI and autonomous manufacturing.
