In mid-August 2026, a 31-year-old man known to law enforcement was seriously injured in an ambush in the Zafferia village of Messina. The victim was struck by at least seven gunshots while riding a bicycle, requiring emergency surgery at the Policlinico.

Following this incident, a shooting occurred in the Zen 2 district of Palermo. A 40-year-old man was struck in the back of the head by a bullet while inside his vehicle. The victim managed to drive himself to Villa Sofia Hospital, where he remained conscious while awaiting surgery for a bullet lodged in his skull.

As of early September, investigators in Palermo continue to pursue a motive involving a personal or romantic dispute regarding the Zen district shooting. The neighborhood has recently seen an increase in violence.
