Guyana is expanding its sustainable and niche tourism sectors through international recognition and professional certification.

Initially, the Guyana Tourism Authority and the Ministry of Tourism, Industry & Commerce announced that five local businesses were added to the Tourism Cares’ Global Meaningful Travel Map. This inclusion highlights the nation’s commitment to conservation and community-led initiatives, featuring partners such as the Iwokrama River Lodge, Karanambu Lodge, and Caiman House Field Station.

Following this, the government launched its inaugural Bird Guide Accreditation Programme in partnership with the South Rupununi Conservation Society. This initiative resulted in the accreditation of 19 professionals, including 12 coastal bird guides and seven Rupununi-based guides. The program aims to support a specialized birding tourism market by linking professional capacity building with the conservation of the country’s more than 800 bird species.
