Research published in The Astrophysical Journal indicates that the 70 Ophiuchi star system, located approximately 16 to 16.7 light-years away, could potentially host stable, Earth-sized planets. The system consists of two K-type dwarf stars that are smaller and cooler than the Sun.

Using computer simulations to track hypothetical Earth-mass planets over 10 million years, astronomers led by Alyssa R. Jankowski examined gravitational stability within the binary setup. The findings suggest that certain orbits around the larger star could remain stable despite the gravitational influence of the second star. Some of these stable zones fall within the habitable zone, where energy levels might allow for liquid water to exist on a planet’s surface.

While the study identifies high-priority targets for future observations, researchers clarified that no actual planets have yet been discovered in the 70 Ophiuchi system. The research also compared these findings to other systems, such as 36 Ophiuchi and Gamma Leonis, to better understand orbital stability and habitability in binary star environments.
