Hamburg’s public transport infrastructure is undergoing significant long-term development and short-term maintenance. The U5 subway project is currently projected for completion by 2040, despite delays in the planning approval process for the City Nord-Jarrestraße section. Hochbahn expects a planning decision for this second phase in the third quarter of 2027, with construction potentially starting in late 2027 or early 2028.

Simultaneously, the U3 subway line is undergoing major autumn closures for track and sleeper renovations. From October 19 to October 29, service is halted between St. Pauli and Rathaus to replace approximately 860 wooden sleepers with durable plastic ones, renew 300 meters of rail, and update connection systems to manage thermal expansion. MetroBus line 17 is being rerouted to serve affected stops such as Landungsbrücken, Baumwall, and Rödingsmarkt.

A second U3 closure is scheduled from November 2 to November 27, affecting the section between Berliner Tor and Barmbek on weekdays to replace 1,334 wooden sleepers and 650 meters of power rail. Regular weekend service is expected to continue during this period.

Additionally, S-Bahn services face disruptions between Berliner Tor and Bergedorf from October 17 through November 1 due to track, sleeper, and bridge construction. This affects the S2 line, while the S7 line will operate at 30-minute intervals between Bergedorf and Aumühle. Deutsche Bahn is providing replacement bus services, and passengers may utilize the RE1 regional express between Bergedorf and the main station.
