The Hanoi People's Committee has approved a new scheme for managing the city’s greenery, parks, and water surfaces. The plan aims to create a unique landscape identity for different areas by designating one or two dominant tree species per street to improve aesthetic uniformity and simplify maintenance.

Under these regulations, tree selection will be tailored to urban characteristics: historical areas will prioritize traditional species with compact canopies, administrative centers will use formal species, new urban areas will favor fast-growing shade trees, and industrial zones will utilize species that filter dust and noise. Developers are also mandated to minimize the cutting or relocation of existing trees during construction.

Implementation has moved into active pruning and replacement phases. To address resident concerns regarding the strong scent produced by high densities of milkwood trees (Alstonia scholaris), the city is pruning nearly 1,000 such trees. Recent efforts on streets including Lê Thanh Nghị, Đào Tấn, and Trung Hòa have already resulted in thinner canopies and more visible branches.

As part of the Department of Construction’s proposal to create a more diverse landscape, specific species replacements are being planned. On Nguyen Du Street, the city intends to introduce Sao đen trees to provide sustainable shade. Other areas may see the introduction of Sấu, Bằng lăng, or fragrant plants like Nguyệt quế to establish distinct identities for various residential and cultural zones.
