Harvard Business School has launched HBS Foundry, an eight-week online entrepreneurship program that utilizes AI-generated digital avatars of seven professors. Developed using technology from the company HeyGen, these digital replicas reproduce the image and voice of faculty members to facilitate interactive learning.

The avatars allow students to simulate real-world business scenarios, such as pitching to investors, making sales calls, or participating in mock board meetings. The AI is designed to listen to the user, ask business-related questions, and provide feedback.

One faculty member, David Shrier, utilized an avatar trained on over half a million words of his own materials, which reportedly expanded his teaching capacity from 78 to 200 students. Katharina Rings, the director of the initiative, stated that the avatars help mitigate the feeling that AI is an anonymous ‘black box’ by providing a recognizable human face. The program costs $699 and combines these AI tools with individual exercises and live specialist sessions.
