Preparations are intensifying for the annual Rosh Hashana pilgrimage to Uman, Ukraine, where tens of thousands of Breslov Hasidim gather to visit the gravesite of Rav Nachman. Due to the ongoing Russian invasion and the closure of Ukrainian airspace, travelers must utilize overland routes through neighboring countries.

In Ukraine, Ihor Taburets, head of the Cherkasy regional administration, has implemented a special entry, exit, and movement regime effective from September 4 through September 17. This security measure includes police checkpoints for both people and vehicles entering the city to ensure safety amidst the conflict.

Neighboring transit hubs are scaling up operations to manage the influx. In Moldova, authorities at Chișinău International Airport are increasing personnel from the Border Police, Customs Service, and Carabinieri to monitor passenger flows. To manage the increased volume, the airport will implement special access restrictions from September 14 to 17. During this period, terminal access will be limited to passengers, staff, and flight crews, with passengers permitted to enter no more than three hours before departure. Additionally, bus traffic will be strictly organized through designated parking and movement zones.

Romania has also activated specific logistical measures. In Suceava, authorities are managing arrivals at Stefan cel Mare Airport, with travelers transiting toward the Siret border crossing. Additionally, Iași Airport has entered a special operating regime, reserving Terminal T3 specifically for processing pilgrims to handle a scheduled volume of 47 flights.

Despite these arrangements, the U.S. Department of State maintains a “Do Not Travel” advisory for Ukraine, citing security risks and limited air-raid shelters.
