HBO Max has announced the release of two new true crime documentary series in Mexico.

The series ‘Poeta Caníbal’, premiering October 29, examines the history of José Luis Calva Zepeda, a man known as ‘The Cannibal Poet’ who committed acts of violence against women in Mexico City. Calva Zepeda, who worked as a taxi driver, poet, and actor, was arrested in 2007 following the death of his partner, Alejandra Galeana. While he was suspected of being a serial killer involved in the deaths of multiple women, he died by suicide in 2007 while awaiting trial. Directed by Matías Gueilbert and produced by ÁNIMA FILMS, the three-episode production utilizes archival media, judicial files, and testimonies from forensic specialists, criminologists, and journalists to analyze his crimes. A central feature of the series is the release of a full 2007 interview conducted by journalist Luis Brito with Calva Zepeda, which was previously only partially known. The documentary also includes perspectives from individuals connected to the case, such as the killer’s sister, Claudia Calva Zepeda, to analyze his predatory patterns and the institutional failures that preceded his crimes.

Additionally, the three-part series ‘Valentín: La muerte del Gallo de Oro’ is scheduled to premiere on November 12. It revisits the 2006 assassination of regional Mexican music star Valentín Elizalde in Reynosa, Tamaulipas. The attack, which occurred on November 25, 2006, resulted in the deaths of Elizalde, his manager Mario Mendoza Grajeda, and his driver Reynaldo Ballesteros. The documentary explores unresolved questions, new evidence, and allegations regarding an independent forensic report that was reportedly excluded from the official investigation.
