HDFC Bank CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan has informed the board that he will not seek reappointment when his tenure concludes in October. 

Following this announcement, the bank initiated a fast-tracked succession process to identify a replacement from both internal and external candidates. Potential internal contenders include Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha and Chief Credit Officer Jimmy Tata, while external candidates reportedly under consideration include former State Bank of India Chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara, Rajiv Sabharwal, Vishaka Mulye, Anup Bagchi, and Ashwini Tewari. The final appointment is subject to approval from the Reserve Bank of India.

The leadership transition comes as the lender faces a 27% decline in share price over the last year and governance scrutiny following the resignation of Chairman Atanu Chakraborty. Despite these challenges, HDFC Bank shares saw an intraday rise of over 2% as investors reacted to the clarity regarding the leadership timeline.

In a recent development, HDFC Bank has submitted two preferred candidates to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the position of Managing Director and CEO. This follows the confirmation that Jagdishan’s term will end on October 26. 

Alongside the CEO search, the bank’s board has approved a senior management restructuring. Chief Credit Officer Jimmy Tata has been elevated to Executive Director for a three-year term, pending RBI approval. Additionally, the board recommended a one-year extension for Executive Director V Srinivasa Rangan starting November 23, 2026. These changes are expected to increase the number of whole-time directors from three to four.
