Research studies have identified potential health benefits associated with coffee consumption regarding various cancer and disease risks.

An observational study published in the British Journal of Nutrition involving 95 women suggested that high intake of polyphenols, primarily from coffee, was linked to a roughly 80% lower mortality rate related to breast cancer. Researchers noted that while coffee contains bioactive compounds that may offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, the study identifies a correlation rather than direct causation.

Subsequent long-term research tracking 355,000 adults in the UK found that high coffee consumption is linked to a significantly lower risk of liver cancer and cirrhosis. The study suggested that consuming between three and five cups per day may provide protection against fatty liver disease. Meta-analyses by teams at the University of Southampton indicate that drinking two cups of coffee per day is associated with a 44 percent reduction in the risk of liver cirrhosis and a 38 percent lower risk of alcoholic cirrhosis.

Medical experts and oncologists have recently advised that to maintain these potential benefits, drinkers should limit the addition of sugar, cream, and high-calorie syrups. Dr. Tingting Tan of City of Hope noted that drinking coffee black or with a small amount of milk does not negate potential benefits, whereas highly sweetened or fat-loaded drinks may lead to obesity and metabolic disorders.

Research continues to focus on natural compounds such as chlorogenic acid, which Dr. Jamie Koprivnikar of the John Theurer Cancer Center highlights for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may help neutralize free radicals.
