The phenomenon of ‘tech neck’—neck pain and strain resulting from prolonged screen use and poor posture—is being increasingly identified as a widespread health issue.

Initial reports highlight that neck pain affects an estimated seven in ten people, with causes ranging from muscular tightness to serious cervical spine issues like nerve compression. In the Philippines, the rise of screen-heavy routines has popularized the term ‘tech neck,’ leading to increased interest in home management tools such as massage chairs.

Medical experts further clarify that the condition involves holding the head in forward or downward positions, which places excessive stress on the cervical spine and muscles like the upper trapezius. Symptoms include stiffness, headaches, and shoulder tension. To mitigate these effects, specialists recommend maintaining eye-level screen positioning, performing mobility exercises like chin tucks, and taking regular breaks to move.

Recent clinical observations note that the strain affects specific muscles such as the levator scapulae and may lead to visible lines or creases around the neck. Research highlights the significant mechanical load caused by posture; while an upright head exerts approximately 12 pounds of pressure, tilting the head forward at a 45-degree angle can increase that load to between 50 and 60 pounds.

A scoping review of studies from 2000 to 2024 indicates that using a smartphone for more than six hours per day is linked to 2.78 times the odds of experiencing neck pain. Experts warn that while aging naturally reduces spinal elasticity, modern technology use is causing these spinal health issues to emerge earlier in life.

## Timeline
