Scientific research has increasingly linked chronic exposure to road and rail traffic noise to various mental and physical health issues.

A longitudinal study in Finland involving over 114,000 residents found that noise levels exceeding the World Health Organization’s recommended limit of 53 dB significantly increase the probability of developing depression, anxiety, elevated cholesterol, and Parkinson’s disease. The study noted that maintaining ambient noise between 45 and 50 dB could mitigate these risks.

Further research conducted by Inserm and Sorbonne University, published in ‘The Lancet Public Health’, has focused on pediatric health by following nearly 8,000 children in the ELFE cohort from birth. This study established that children consistently exposed to road noise levels of at least 60 dB(A) from birth to age 5.5 showed higher rates of ‘internalized’ symptoms, such as emotional difficulties and social withdrawal. The timing of exposure also proved significant: high exposure at 2 months and 5.5 years was associated with peer relationship difficulties, while exposure at age 5.5 was linked to ‘externalized’ symptoms, including hyperactivity and inattention.

Recent findings reinforce these risks, linking constant high noise exposure to auditory damage, sleep disturbances, chronic stress, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Epidemiologist Eloi Chazelas at Inserm has specifically highlighted how heavy road traffic noise during childhood correlates with emotional and behavioral difficulties by age ten.

In response to these public health challenges, Chile’s Ministry of the Environment has identified land transit as the primary source of urban noise. Consequently, the Chilean ministries of Environment and Transport and Telecommunications have initiated reviews of noise emission regulations for motor vehicles, focusing on motorcycles and improved control mechanisms to mitigate health risks.
