Medical experts in Turkey have issued warnings regarding health risks associated with the intensive use of various cosmetic and beauty products.

Initial warnings from oncology specialist Dr. Burçin Çakan Demirel highlighted risks from chemical hair straighteners, which may be linked to increased uterine cancer risk due to substances like formaldehyde. Concerns were also raised regarding benzoyl peroxide potentially developing into benzene when stored in high temperatures, as well as risks from certain waterproof makeup chemicals.

Prof. Dr. Ayşe Akman of Akdeniz University has expanded on these concerns, specifically regarding the use of UV light in beauty salons for drying permanent or prosthetic nails. Dr. Akman noted that these light sources can emit wavelengths similar to harmful solarium lights, potentially causing premature skin aging and increased cancer risk. To mitigate these risks, she suggests that frequent users wear fingerless gloves or apply sunscreen to their hands during the procedure.

Additionally, Dr. Akman warned that thick layers of permanent polish may mask underlying tissue conditions, such as fungal infections or permanent deformities like dystrophy, thereby delaying diagnoses. The chemical components in these products can also trigger allergic reactions, including contact dermatitis or eczema, affecting both clients and salon professionals. She advises anyone noticing changes in nail color, shape, or structure to consult a dermatologist immediately.
