Health authorities in Cuba have raised alarms regarding the consumption of ‘Shaka’, an energy drink popular among adolescents and young adults. In Holguín, officials warned that the drink’s combination of caffeine, sugar, taurine, and B-complex vitamins can cause heart palpitations, anxiety, insomnia, and tremors. Specific concern was noted for variants containing vodka or mojito flavors, which may normalize alcohol consumption for minors.

Following these warnings, five young adults aged 18 to 22 were hospitalized at the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial Hospital in Sancti Spíritus due to intoxication. Reported symptoms included vomiting, sweating, and rapid heartbeat, with one patient entering a coma requiring mechanical ventilation. Medical directors noted that while the drink may cause initial euphoria, excessive use can lead to agitation, elevated blood pressure, and extreme fatigue.

Dr. Julio César Hernández Perera, a specialist in internal medicine and member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences, has further cautioned that the combination of alcohol and stimulants like caffeine and taurine creates significant health risks. He noted that the drink can mask alcohol intoxication, creating a ‘false sense of alertness’ that may lead to medical emergencies.

According to Dr. Hernández, nearly 45% of regular consumers may experience acute cardiovascular issues, such as hypertension and arrhythmias, while approximately 33% face neuropsychological problems including anxiety, panic, and hallucinations. Consumers have reported immediate physical impacts, including ‘violent tachycardia’ and severe dizziness, with some appearing disconnected from their surroundings while suffering from intense palpitations.
