In Katsina State, UNICEF, with support from the Global Fund, renovated and transferred three primary healthcare facilities—the Maternal and Child Health Centre in Bakiyawa, the Sabon Gari Primary Health Centre in Daura, and the Dandutse Primary Health Centre in Funtua—to the state government. UNICEF emphasized that long-term sustainability requires the Katsina State Primary Health Care Agency to manage staffing, maintenance, and medicine supplies. In Kano State, the government approved the upgrade of five Primary Healthcare Centres in the Garun Malam, Kumbotso, Ghari, Garko, and Takai Local Government Areas to General Hospitals. An assessment team has been formed to evaluate infrastructure, equipment, and manpower to facilitate this transition toward expanded secondary healthcare services. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-26: Kano State approves upgrade of five healthcare centres to general hospitals Kano State has approved upgrading five Primary Healthcare Centres to General Hospitals to expand secondary healthcare access in underserved local government areas. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/kano-state-approves-upgrade-of-five-healthcare-centres-to-general-hospitals ### 2026-08-28: UNICEF renovates three healthcare facilities in Katsina UNICEF has handed over three renovated primary healthcare facilities in Katsina State, Nigeria, to the local government to improve medical services for women and children. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/unicef-renovates-three-healthcare-facilities-in-katsina --- Cite as: Healthcare infrastructure improvements in Northern Nigeria.
