HIFK began its season with positive momentum during preseason training in Sweden and a 3-2 overtime victory against Sport in Vaasa. The domestic win was highlighted by the return of defenseman Aron Kiviharju, who recorded two assists following a month-long injury.

However, the team’s performance shifted during the first Stadin derby of the SM-liiga season, where HIFK lost 3-2 in overtime to Jokerit. Following the loss, hockey expert Tony Salmelainen criticized the team’s lack of organized play and suggested that head coach Olli Jokinen has not established a clear foundation for improvement.
