Research into advanced materials for extreme thermal environments is progressing through different metallurgical approaches. In the United States, researchers from Virginia Tech, Iowa State University, and Arizona State University are working on self-lubricating high-temperature alloys. Supported by a National Science Foundation grant, this project focuses on metals that utilize oxidation to spontaneously generate a thin, regenerative oxide layer when operating between 600°C and 900°C.

Concurrently, engineers at the Kurchatov Institute’s National Research Center, VIAM, in Russia, are developing an intermetallic titanium alloy specifically for engine blades. This material features a strict atomic arrangement to increase hardness and heat resistance. The development team aims for the alloy to operate in temperatures between 700°C and 900°C, with plans for certification and engine testing over the next two to three years.
