A reboot of the ‘Highlander’ fantasy film franchise is in production, with Henry Cavill taking over the lead role of the immortal Scottish warrior Connor MacLeod. Cavill succeeds Christopher Lambert, who starred in the original 1986 film. The franchise includes three sequels, a 1990s television series, and a 2007 reboot.

Chad Stahelski, director of the ‘John Wick’ franchise, is directing the film and is expected to bring high-intensity choreography to the signature sword fights. The cast includes Russell Crowe as Ramirez, Dave Bautista as The Kurgan, Karen Gillan as Heather, Djimon Hounsou as Sunda Kastagir, Siobhán Cullen as Brenda, and Drew McIntyre as Angus MacLeod. Jeremy Irons and Kevin McKidd have also joined in undisclosed roles.

To prepare for the role, Cavill underwent approximately two years of training in martial arts and sword fighting. In an interview with Men’s Journal, Cavill explained that this training was intended to provide a ‘broad technical repertoire’ to allow for more organic movement during filming rather than relying solely on pre-designed choreography.

Recent reports indicate that Cavill has impressed his co-stars with his mastery of a Scottish accent. In an interview with Collider, Drew McIntyre stated that the actor has achieved a ‘perfect accent that will leave audiences speechless.’ While the production has encountered some delays, the film is currently expected to debut in 2027.
