In Arunachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Pema Khandu proposed a roadmap to strengthen yak conservation and livelihoods through the establishment of the Arunachal Pradesh Yak Herders and Products Development Cooperative Society. This plan aims to improve market access for herders and noted that supporting communities in remote border areas is a matter of national security. Following these developments, Bhutan, India, and Nepal announced the launch of the Himalayan Yak Herders’ Network, scheduled for 23 October 2026. Hosted by Bhutan, this regional platform brings together federations from all three nations to facilitate collective advocacy and cross-border cooperation. The initiative seeks to address critical threats to highland communities, including climate change, shrinking pastures, and declining yak populations. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-21: Bhutan, India, and Nepal launch Himalayan Yak Herders’ Network Bhutan, India, and Nepal are launching the Himalayan Yak Herders’ Network to support pastoral communities facing climate change, shrinking pastures, and declining yak populations. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/bhutan-india-and-nepal-launch-himalayan-yak-herders-network ### 2026-10-17: Pema Khandu proposes yak herders’ cooperative to boost Himalayan livelihoods Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu proposed a new cooperative society and a strategic roadmap to boost yak conservation and improve the livelihoods of Himalayan herders in remote border regions. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/pema-khandu-proposes-yak-herders-cooperative-to-boost-himalayan-livelihoods --- Cite as: Himalayan yak herding conservation and cooperation.
