In 2026, Honduras has recorded 39,243 returning citizens between January 1 and October 22. Data from Migración Honduras indicates that the majority of these individuals, 30,688, arrived via air travel, while 8,555 returned by land. The primary countries of origin for these returnees are the United States, Mexico, and Guatemala. This figure accounts for more than 91% of the total number of Hondurans who returned during the entire year of 2025.

Additionally, migratory authorities identified 8,176 individuals in irregular migration situations transiting through Honduran borders. This group, consisting of 57.51% men, 26.37% women, and 16.12% minors, originated primarily from Ecuador, Cuba, Venezuela, China, and the Dominican Republic.

Parallel to migration trends, the country is experiencing high homicide rates. According to the Police Statistical System (SEPOL), 1,943 homicides were recorded between January and September 2026. The Distrito Central reported the highest number of violent deaths at 229, followed by San Pedro Sula with 124. Homicides rose in September 2026, with 241 recorded compared to 205 in September 2025.

Experts from the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) suggest that tightening U.S. migration restrictions are altering patterns, leading more individuals to consider Mexico and Spain as alternative destinations.
