Public concern regarding road safety and child passenger security in Hong Kong has been heightened by recent social media videos showing children in unsafe positions within vehicles.

An initial incident involved a video of a 7- to 8-year-old boy seated in the driver’s position of a parked Tesla in Sham Shui Po, which prompted criticism regarding parental responsibility and the enforcement of the Road Traffic Ordinance.

Following a separate incident on August 21, Hong Kong police arrested a 37-year-old female driver for suspected dangerous driving. Footage showed her operating an electric vehicle with cross-border plates while a young child was seated on her lap near Lei Muk Shue Estate. Authorities have used these incidents to remind the public of legal penalties for dangerous driving and the requirement for children under eight years old or shorter than 1.35 meters to use appropriate restraint devices.
