Hong Kong’s retail sector has maintained a growth streak for 15 consecutive months. In July, retail sales rose 4.5% year-on-year to approximately US$3.95 billion. This expansion was heavily supported by the jewellery, watches, and clocks category, which saw a 19.7% increase, alongside growth in electrical goods and consumer durables.

Analysts have characterized this economic rebound as a ‘flight to quality,’ noting that high-end consumption is a primary driver of the recovery. This surge in luxury spending has also provided relief to the real estate sector. While online retail sales continue to grow, with a 9.5% year-on-year increase in July, other sectors such as motor vehicles, parts, and fuel have experienced significant declines.

For the first half of 2026, the economy grew by 5.1% compared to the same period in 2025, marking the strongest half-yearly performance in nearly five years.
