Rupi Soren, wife of the late JMM founder Shibu Soren and mother of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, passed away on Wednesday, October 7, at approximately 80 years old. She died at Hill View Hospital in Ranchi after being hospitalized since September 18 for respiratory issues and a prolonged illness. Her condition had recently deteriorated to the point where she was placed on life support.

Following her death, Chief Minister Hemant Soren cancelled scheduled programs and postponed a proposed state cabinet meeting. The mortal remains were brought to the Chief Minister’s residence in Morabadi for final respects. Political leaders, including Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, KT Rama Rao, and former Chief Minister Raghubar Das, expressed their condolences. Rupi Soren was a political figure who contested the Dumka Lok Sabha seat in 1999. Her passing follows the death of her husband, Shibu Soren, in August 2025.

On October 18, Chief Minister Hemant Soren performed the ‘Shraddh’ post-death rituals for his mother at his ancestral village of Nemra in the Ramgarh district. The ceremonies followed the Dashakarma ritual and included the Chief Minister undergoing tonsuring as part of the customary rites. Thousands of people attended the ‘Sanskar Bhoj’, a traditional post-cremation feast. Notable attendees included Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar and yoga guru Baba Ramdev. Local administration implemented significant security and logistical measures, including the deployment of security forces and the establishment of three helipads to manage the large crowds.
