Houston Astros owner Jim Crane previously indicated that manager Joe Espada’s future would depend on postseason performance. Following a postseason sweep by the White Sox, Espada expressed a desire to remain with the team for the 2027 season. Despite the sweep, the Astros secured the American League West title, though they finished the season with an 81-81 record, becoming the first team in Major League Baseball history to reach the postseason without a winning record.

On October 14, the Astros announced they will not renew Espada’s contract, making him a free agent when his deal expires at the end of the month. Owner Jim Crane stated that Espada “represented the team and the Houston community in a positive way.” Espada’s three-season tenure concluded with a total record of 256-229 and two American League West division titles, though he did not secure a postseason series victory. He has reportedly been granted permission to interview for a managerial vacancy with the Seattle Mariners.

The departure is part of broader organizational shifts following the August exit of general manager Dana Brown. The team is also implementing significant coaching changes: bench coach Omar Lopez has been offered a different role, while catching coach Tim Cossins, gameplan coordinator Tommy Kawamura, third base coach Tony Perezchica, assistant hitting coach Anthony Iapoce, and assistant pitching coach Ethan Katz will all be replaced.

Several coaches will remain for the 2027 season, including pitching coach Josh Miller, hitting coach Victor Rodriguez, and first base coach Dave Clark. Looking ahead, the front office must manage roster challenges, including salary arbitration for 11 players, such as Isaac Paredes and Jeremy Pena, and addressing a starting rotation that posted a 4.81 ERA.
