Ahead of the 2026 NFL season, Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans expressed confidence in his team’s defense, aiming to maintain one of the league’s top units while noting that offensive performance would be the critical factor for success. Despite projections of a strong 11-6 record, the team began the season with an 0-4 record.

In response to these early struggles, particularly a defensive ranking of 26th in passing yards allowed, Ryans announced he is reclaiming defensive play-calling duties from defensive coordinator Matt Burke. This move is intended to streamline communication and improve performance, mirroring a coaching adjustment Ryans made during the 2025 season to address an early-season slump.
