Hulu has released the documentary ‘Clown Panic’, directed by Ed Perkins, as part of its ‘Huluween’ programming. The film investigates the 2016 phenomenon involving reports of killer clown sightings in Grenville County, South Carolina, which escalated into a nationwide social media frenzy and moral panic.

The documentary examines how these sightings led to school lockdowns, police investigations, and the formation of armed vigilante groups. Through archival footage, viral videos, and interviews with witnesses, law enforcement, cultural historians, and professional clowns, the film analyzes how social media algorithms and national anxiety transformed an urban legend into a mass hysteria event.

In addition to tracing the phenomenon from a small South Carolina community to a global media event, the film explores the cultural roots of coulrophobia. It examines the influence of fictional characters, such as Stephen King’s Pennywise, and real-life figures like serial killer John Wayne Gacy. The production also analyzes how the 2016 trend was fueled by viral pranks and individuals attempting to promote independent film projects or businesses, noting the distinction between harmless stunts and more disturbing incidents.
