An international scientific consortium has developed a large-scale cellular map of a human brain region, analyzing over 6 million cell nuclei from approximately 1,500 individuals across a wide age range.

Initial findings established the ability to observe gene activity and cellular changes in samples from healthy individuals and patients with conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Subsequent analysis of this high-resolution mapping revealed thousands of previously invisible gene-disease associations.

Researchers identified specific biological pathways for these conditions, noting that Alzheimer’s is linked to microglia dysfunction, while schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are associated with dysregulation in inhibitory neurons. The study also highlighted pleiotropic effects, where single genes influence different diseases based on cell type. By incorporating diverse ancestral backgrounds, the research confirmed that these genetic dysregulations are conserved across different ancestries.
