Nobel Peace Prize laureate Denis Mukwege alerted the United Nations to a severe humanitarian crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), describing the situation as a ‘war of aggression and occupation.’ Mukwege emphasized that millions are facing armed violence, hunger, and the Ebola virus, with women and children being disproportionately affected. He called for an end to ‘international negligence’ and urged for the enforcement of international law to protect civilians. Following these alerts, Belgian Members of the European Parliament, Elio Di Rupo and Hilde Vautmans, demanded increased European Union solidarity. They highlighted that approximately 18.5 million people require aid, with millions more facing acute food insecurity and internal displacement. Vautmans specifically called for the enforcement of existing resolutions, including sanctions against Rwanda, citing concerns over the security situation and the alleged links between M23 rebels and former President Joseph Kabila. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-19: European MEPs demand action on DRC humanitarian crisis Belgian MEPs are urging the EU to increase humanitarian aid to the DRC and enforce sanctions against Rwanda to address the ongoing conflict and massive food insecurity in the region. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/european-meps-demand-action-on-drc-humanitarian-crisis ### 2026-09-28: Denis Mukwege alerts UN to humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC Nobel laureate Denis Mukwege alerted the UN to the humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC, warning of the heavy toll on women and children due to armed violence, hunger, and disease. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/denis-mukwege-alerts-un-to-humanitarian-crisis-in-eastern-drc --- Cite as: Humanitarian crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the_C.
