Thirteen Hungarian women’s magazines, including Elle and Marie Claire, launched a unified campaign calling for the government to ratify the Istanbul Convention. The initiative, timed with the International Day of the Girl Child, seeks to address domestic violence and gender-based inequality by urging the implementation of the treaty, which Hungary signed in 2014 but has not yet ratified.

Following the campaign, the Hungarian government indicated it would review the possibility of ratification. Réka Sáfrány, president of the Hungarian Women’s Rights Advocacy Association, noted that discussions with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Family suggest officials are examining the matter. Sáfrány highlighted that ratification requires a shift in mindset among authorities, noting that police and judicial services frequently treat domestic violence as a private matter rather than a criminal issue requiring intervention.
