Data regarding the Hungarian retail sector shows a mix of volume growth and underlying structural challenges. According to the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, retail trade volume increased by 4.9% in July compared to the previous year, with significant expansions in pharmaceutical, medical, and cosmetic stores (9.2%), fuel retail (8.1%), and internet retail (8.9%).

However, an analysis by MBH Bank suggests the sector faces stagnation. While turnover increased by 4.5% in the first half of the year, this was largely driven by fuel consumption; excluding fuel, growth was only 3.8%. The bank noted concerns regarding increased concentration, store closures, and a decline in food specialty stores.

Labor trends also indicate shifts, including a sharp decrease in employees due to closures and a demographic change where one in five workers is retired or nearing retirement age. Additionally, the sector’s share of gross value added has fallen to 9.9%, and retail investment has been declining since early 2024.
