Hungarian Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy has introduced initiatives to address housing and infrastructure challenges in Hungary.

To combat a housing crisis characterized by rising prices and a shortage of student accommodation, the government announced the Wekerle Sándor Housing Program. Vitézy noted that real housing prices have risen by 120 percent over the last 15 years, while real wages increased by only 60 percent. The initiative aims to stimulate the construction of affordable rental housing and dormitories using European Union recovery funds, with a potential total of 2 billion euros when including bank and market co-financing. Vitézy highlighted a specific shortage of student housing, noting only 49,000 dormitory spots are available for 320,000 students.

Regarding infrastructure, Vitézy addressed severe issues within the MÁV railway network, describing inherited “shocking conditions” that included inoperable carriages, broken passenger information systems, and track restrictions affecting 40 percent of the network. He also noted the insolvency of the Dunakeszi vehicle repair facility.

Expanding on transport infrastructure, Vitézy announced a long-term national road renovation program to be unveiled in September. He reported that the state-managed network of over 31,000 kilometers inherited a heavy renovation debt, with nearly half of national roads requiring immediate, full-scale reconstruction. This year, over 700 kilometers of roads are being improved through works by Magyar Közút and external contractors.

Regarding investment regulations, the ministry previously announced the revocation of ‘accelerated procedure’ status for several major projects facing local opposition, such as the Láng Machine Factory and the Pázmány Campus, to ensure local zoning and height restrictions are respected.
