Hungary is undergoing a transition in its electricity generation structure, moving toward increased renewable energy use while maintaining nuclear power as its primary backbone. As of 2025, nuclear power via the Paks Nuclear Power Plant provides 40 percent of production, while solar energy has expanded significantly to account for 27 to 29 percent of total generation.

Despite this growth, the sector faces several structural and regulatory challenges. Experts, including Ernő Kiss of the Hungarian Solar Energy and Collector Association, have noted that the industry requires more predictable regulation, improved electrical grids, and increased energy storage capacity to manage growth and prevent price volatility. While solar capacity is projected to reach 8 to 9 GW by 2030, the lack of storage remains a critical concern.

Additionally, Hungary remains heavily dependent on imports for electricity, natural gas, and oil, which continues to impact the national current account.
