Sources: 6. Developments: 2. Following a regulatory change implemented in September 2024, the Hungarian government has mandated that approximately 32,325 plug-in hybrid (5P) and extended-range electric (5N) vehicles replace their green license plates with white ones by November 30. Under the new rules, light green plates are reserved exclusively for fully electric (5E) and zero-emission (5Z) models. The Digital Hungary Agency (DMÜ) has stated that no individual notifications will be sent to owners, who must initiate the change themselves at a government window. Vehicle owners have two replacement options: a full re-registration with a new number combination for 17,475 HUF, or a character-identical plate change for 16,605 HUF. The latter option allows owners to maintain existing insurance and parking privileges without modification, though it requires two personal appearances for processing. Starting December 1, authorities may seize expired green license plates and registration documents during roadside inspections, which could result in vehicles being withdrawn from circulation until new plates are obtained. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-05: Hungary mandates license plate changes for 32,000 hybrid vehicles Over 32,000 plug-in hybrid vehicle owners in Hungary must replace their green license plates by November 30 due to new emissions classification rules. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/hungary-mandates-license-plate-changes-for-32000-hybrid-vehicles-1 ### 2026-10-02: Hungary mandates license plate changes for 32,000 hybrid vehicles Hungarian plug-in hybrid owners must replace green license plates with white ones by November 30 to avoid vehicle impoundment and registration seizure. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/hungary-mandates-license-plate-changes-for-32000-hybrid-vehicles --- Cite as: Hungary hybrid vehicle license plate mandate.
