Hungary’s National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) is implementing new digital reporting requirements. Starting 1 September 2026, businesses must submit aggregated daily electronic receipt data to NAV within three days. This requirement applies to both manual paper receipt books and computer-based receipt programs, though businesses using electronic cash registers are exempt as their data is transmitted automatically.

To facilitate the transition, the former KOBAK portal has been renamed the ‘Pénztárgép Portál’ (Cash Register Portal). This system manages online and e-cash register affairs as well as manual data entry; existing users retain their current access rights and data. For small businesses, such as market vendors, NAV offers the ‘ePénztárgép’ mobile application to automate data submission. Larger enterprises may fulfill requirements via machine connection.

Following the system launch on 1 September, NAV reported receiving 1.5 billion forints worth of receipt data within the first three days. Approximately 20,000 businesses registered 424,000 receipts through the web-based Pénztárgép Portál, while 12,000 businesses implemented the ePénztárgép mobile application, recording nearly 1.3 billion forints in value. These methods allow the authority to monitor transactions previously only visible during physical audits.

To assist with compliance, NAV has introduced a four-month sanction-free grace period from 1 September to 31 December 2026. During this time, tax inspectors will focus on providing guidance and support rather than issuing fines. Penalties for non-compliance will apply after 1 January 2027.

In the automotive sector, Chinese manufacturers are expanding their presence. Foton has launched several models in Hungary, including the electric Cavan C1 van and various electric pickups and trucks, with prices ranging from approximately 9.8 million to 14.9 million forints. Consumer interest in Chinese brands is rising sharply; inquiries for Chinese models increased 77% year-on-year in the first half of 2026.
