A 41-year-old man named Smith has been sentenced to six years in prison, including a three-year non-parole period, following a violent hostage situation on a CountryLink passenger service in the Hunter region. 

During the incident on a train traveling between Broadmeadow and Moree, Smith, who was on parole, committed a domestic violence assault against his partner while armed with a knife. The situation escalated when staff members attempted to intervene, leading Smith to threaten the lives of both his partner and the staff. Police eventually subdued him using a Taser and capsicum spray. 

At the Newcastle District Court, Judge Roy Ellis described the event as a “scary experience” for passengers and noted the vulnerability of the staff involved.
