A dispute over street parking between residents and students at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas, escalated into a public controversy after a video of the encounter went viral. The conflict began when a student, identified as Bri, recorded an interaction with a couple living near the historically Black university. The student reported that the residents had been leaving notes on vehicles parked on public streets, specifically on blocks of East 9th Street. During the recorded exchange, one resident cited the $1.5 million price paid for their home and made disparaging remarks regarding the university’s 25% graduation rate. Following the video’s circulation online, which garnered over one million views on Instagram, the situation transitioned from a local dispute to public demonstrations. Crowds of students and community members gathered outside the resident's home to hold protests involving chanting, music, and signs. The incident has drawn significant local attention regarding neighborhood dynamics and gentrification. The City of Austin has since confirmed that the curbs on the relevant blocks of East 9th Street remain open for public parking. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-13: Huston-Tillotson University student dispute sparks Austin protests A viral video of a parking dispute between a Huston-Tillotson University student and an Austin resident has led to community protests in East Austin. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/austin-protests-erupt-following-viral-hbcu-student-confrontation ### 2026-10-08: Huston-Tillotson University students confront neighbors over parking dispute A viral video captures a confrontation in Austin, Texas, involving Huston-Tillotson University students and neighbors over legal street parking and alleged harassment. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/huston-tillotson-university-students-confront-neighbors-over-parking-dispute --- Cite as: Huston-Tillotson University parking dispute and protests.
