Recent scientific developments have focused on improving the power output, durability, and cost-efficiency of hydrogen fuel cell technologies.

Researchers at the Beijing Institute of Technology developed a proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell that produces approximately four times the power of conventional designs. By engineering a Brønsted acid-Lewis base interface, the team achieved a tenfold increase in proton diffusion speed. Assistant professor Li Jie noted that this technology could allow fuel cell vehicle power stacks to become “smaller and lighter,” potentially benefiting heavy-duty transport and aerospace applications.

Further advancements have addressed material longevity and cost. At Nagoya University, researchers created a protective coating using nitrogen-containing graphene to prevent platinum particles from clumping, maintaining surface area after 30,000 voltage changes. Additionally, a collaborative team involving Tohoku University, the Technion, Hokkaido University, and AZUL Energy, Inc. developed platinum-free catalysts for anion-exchange membrane fuel cells. These metal phthalocyanine-based catalysts achieved a power density exceeding 900 milliwatts per square centimeter.
